As time goes by, the interior wood trims goes very dull. A car as old as mine - 13 years - certainly shows its age here. Instead of the dark, rich color you see, when you remove the trims and look at the parts that's been hidden behind the door handle trim, it's now almost yellow and very boring. The old look:
The new look:
I used a 300 grit wet/dry to sand down the trims and then give it a clear coat finish. This is what you see on the first four pictures. The gear shifter trim got the original color back, the rest of the trims became shiny but kept the very light color. Then I recolored the trims and gave it 10-15 very thin layers of clear coat spray lack, waited for 4-5 days and used a wool polishing kit for my cordless screwdriver with a max. of 550 rpm's. On the corners I slowed down the speed to avoid pealing off the clear coat. From the message board I know there are products which will give you the same shine, if not better, with less effort. Unfortunately, when living in Denmark, you don't have that many choices: you have to use what you can get. Therefore I will not go into details on what products I have used, but simply show you what difference a refinished trim makes. |
