Sold my E32

Due to the incredible expenses of keeping my apparently worn out E32 running, I decided to sell it. Instead I bought an E34, 525iA, which I hope will be somewhat cheaper to run due to better maintenance. Below is some of the problems I encountered with the 735i:

  1. The car broke down constantly. I drove only 3.000 miles during the year I had it because of that. Normally, I drive 3 times as much...
  2. I didn't dare to take the car for longer trips, since it broke down all the time.
  3. Parts are way to expensive for a car so unreliable. BMW are known for high price on parts, and in Denmark, the price is usually 100-200% above the US'. Unfortunately, shipping from the States is so expensive, that this, combined with the waiting period, excludes the option of buying parts overseas.
  4. In certain areas of politics, Denmark is more communistic minded than China! The car area is one of these. Our government would prefer that we all had bicycles and took the bus for longer trips. No cars, please! Therefore, not a single week goes by without new car taxes being planned to finish off as many car owners as possible, as quickly as possible. Considering that we already pay a 180% tax on new cars, an individual tax based on the size of car ($930 a year for the BMW. Smaller cars are let off easier) and a $3 tax on each gallon of gas, one should think that further taxes wouldn't be necessary...!
  5. All older BMW's and Mercedes are nose diving in value right now. The larger the car, the bigger the dive. My 735i lost 50 % in value during the year I had it, so I couldn't pay it off with the money I got for it! Just to get it off my hands, I had to pay $3.500!
  6. During the last few days I had it, my car was vandalized twice! Normally, this only happens once or twice each month!
  7. All in all, the cost of driving that car was more than $1.000 a month. No, no typing error, it really was that expensive, and remember that I only drove something like 250 miles pr. month. You do the math.

After parting with the BMW, I did the sensible thing: I bought a Japanese car. A Mitsubishi Carisma, which is a small European built family car. About the size of a BMW 3-series, but without the power and driving pleasure. This one is going to be a keeper, I decided. And it certainly was an OK car, almost no problems for a year and a half, but I noticed that I never took it for a spin without a good reason, because it was pointless. It simply wasn't fun to drive.
In November 2001, I did something about that. I went out and bought myself a BMW again. This time I got a 525iA. Seems to be well maintained, so maybe this one will actually be possible for me to keep running. No matter what, it's great to be back in a BMW :-)

UPDATE 2004:

Got an E32 yet again! The E34 was almost trouble free, as far as a car that age goes, but I really like the space and looks of the E32. The new one is the car on the front page.
I will do my best to update this site with new E32 repairs, when I get the time.
