If you consider buying either an E34 or especially the E32, please be careful, or you might end up with a worn out car. First of
all, check the milage. How many miles are you willing to accept? High milage might not be a big problem, as long as you know
how the car was driven and maintained. This means that you can buy a good car and drive it for many, many years without
problems, as long as you keep it in a good condition. The thing is, these cars are very expensive to maintain/repair, so some
owners just run the car down and sell it! If you get a car like that (I did), you are in big trouble. As soon as you replace one part, two other parts break down. You are now in the infamous BMW money pit.
Both the OBC (OnBoard Computer) and instrument cluster were replaced on my E32, so I didn't have a chance to check the milage. Didn't think of it back then, but that should have sounded off my alarm.
Before the E32, I used to drive cars like Ford and Mercedes. When other cars are beginning to let go, it usually happens at the
same time everywhere. Normally, you can learn a lot about a cars condition by placing it on a lift and look for rust and wear
underneath. Not on the BMW's. A Mitsubishi I owned for about a year was more than 10 years younger than my E32 and still it
had the same amount of rust (at least!). The underside of the BMW's are almost corrosion free. The same thing can't be said for the body, unfortunately...
Very big wheels had been fitted to my E32 by a former owner (removed before I got it). Too big! One of the rear inner plastic
fenders had touched the wheel and was therefore partly gone, so all dirt and water had been sprayed up on the bare metal. Rust
was the result, of course. Even with the advise from a friend, who used to do this for a living, there was no way to stop the
corrosion. Fix it today and fight it again in two weeks. The high humidity in Denmark (normally at 85-95%) didn't help a lot either...
Also check ALL the electronics and other gadgets, including the interior heating system. What may look like a simple problem,
could turn out to be very costly. Some things you can fix for yourself without spending a dime, like when some of the exterior
lights suddenly turn off, other problems can turn out to be a real nightmare. Like if there is a vague scent of coolant inside the car or if one side of the interior airflow is always hot...
Check out the following pages. They might be useful if you already have an E32 or E34 and are looking for some hints on fixing
the simpler issues. It might also be worth a look if you are just considering buying one, since you will learn some of the thing to look out for when buying. Checking with the very knowledgeable guys on http://www.bimmer.org/e32/messages/ for the E32 or http://bimmer.roadfly.com/bmw/e34/ for the E34 is always a great idea too.
Please note that this site was mainly build on information from my E32. I now drive a E34 and have found them to be so much alike, that your hardly will notice any difference concerning the material on this site.
Have fun! :)
